Tamura Natsuki / Jim Black

Description:

The two improvisers, two geniuses who made the New York improvised music scene famous in the 90's, have been performing together for about 25 years since "White&Blue" recorded in 1999. The two instantly react to each other and reach a high point of energetic performance mixed with uniqueness in 47 minutes! Born in 1951, Natsuki Tamura is a trumpeter who has traveled around the world, Europe, the U.S. and Japan since his first trip to the U.S. in 1986, and continues to perform powerfully with a free spirit. Drummer Jim Black has an unshakable presence that easily transcends the barriers of jazz, avant-rock, punk, and other genres. The two geniuses recorded in a studio in Bern, Switzerland in 2023! Tamura and Jim both studied at Berklee College of Music in the mid-80s, and have built their careers by playing unconventionally and placing emphasis on improvisation. Since then, the two have often performed together in a group led by Goko Fujii and featuring Mark Dresser, but this is their first duo work in about 25 years. What can be heard throughout the work is a vivid interplay of sounds. According to Tamura, "Jim, the drummer, is just so energetic, happy, and has a great intuition that he instantly understands what we are trying to do. He is also serious about tone and balance, and gives us sound opinions. The stimulating performance is a telepathic response, with roars, whispers, and unique laughter. Sometimes they glare (?), sometimes they glare (?), sometimes they glare (?), sometimes they glare (?). The music is inspired by Tamura's motifs, and the musicians are able to create creative heights with their instantaneous judgments of the timing of their performances. Tamura prepares a motif for the music, and records it directly with the score on the day of recording. In other words, new drama was created through improvisation inspired on the spot. Jim, who handles a variety of percussions with great spontaneity, and trumpeter Tamura, who also handles voice, rich tone, and volume control, fill the 9-track 47-minute album with the joy of playing music!
