Vahan Mardirossian’s Sixth CD! The Second Volume of Brahms’ Piano Works! This second CD in the series of Brahms’ piano works performed by Vahan Mardirossian—who is currently active as a conductor—features the rarely performed “Waltzes, Op. 39,” the famous “Two Rhapsodies, Op. 79,” and “Four Pieces, Op. 119,” Brahms’ final piano works from his very late period. As with the previous release, this album showcases Vahan’s expertise in Brahms, but what deserves special mention is the set of 16 waltzes dedicated to the renowned music critic Eduard Hanslick. Hanslick could not hide his surprise, remarking, “That taciturn and noble Brahms has written waltzes.” These waltzes range from light-hearted Viennese styles to dignified and elegant pieces, and at times even take on a melancholic, Hungarian atmosphere; Vahan masterfully brings out the character of each waltz with his superb musicality and exceptional technique. In the Rhapsodies, his exquisite sense of tempo combined with dynamic expression results in a deeply compelling performance. In the Four Pieces—which could be called Brahms’s testament—he fully captures Brahms’s restrained emotions in the first two Intermezzi, while in the following two pieces, particularly the final Rhapsody, he vividly portrays the intense emotional turmoil that could be described as the roar of Brahms’s soul.
