Most of the “versions with chorus” left behind by Klemperer were recorded with his regular ensemble, the (New) Philharmonia Orchestra (there is also a recording with Cologne Radio), and a considerable number of both live and studio recordings have survived. This recording features a performance from his guest appearance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1956. It has reminded me once again just how truly magnificent this performance is, and at the same time, I find it utterly baffling why this particular recording isn’t more widely discussed among Klemperer’s “Choral” recordings. Klemperer, who also left behind a legendary performance of Mahler’s “Resurrection,” had an exceptional rapport with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. As he was still performing energetically before suffering his severe burns, every aspect of this performance—from his interpretation of the piece and its artistic form to his guidance of the chorus, the sense of scale, his fluid tempo control, and his remarkable concentration—is top-notch. Despite being recorded over 50 years ago, the exceptionally clear sound quality certainly helps convey the excellence of this performance. *Please note that since an old master was used, there may be noise, fluctuations, and skips.
