This first release is the "Third Year," including the famous "Fountain of the Villa Este. The ambiguous tonal music, which makes extensive use of recitative and dissonance, is considered difficult and difficult to understand, but in recent years it has been highly acclaimed as a masterpiece that celebrates the deep spirituality of Liszt's later years. Medjieva's performance, in which she seems to chew each note, conveys the composer's anguish and resignation to a painful degree. From Rainer's notes, "...the piano resonates and sounds well, from the low, soft chords to the detailed, delicate passages. The pace of the piano reminds me a lot of the composer's solitary posture.
