Description:

Solace and loneliness. Weaving a poetry that lies beyond sorrow - the second volume in this rich series! The second installment of the Schubert series by Medjieva, a talented Russian artist whose "Chopin: Nocturnes" won the 2010 Recording Academy Award in the instrumental music category. In addition to two important works composed in 1822-23 ("Wanderer Fantasy" and "Piano Sonata No. 14") and a masterpiece from his later years ("Improvisations, Op. 142" and "Three Piano Pieces, D946"), the program this time includes three Schubert songs arranged by Liszt for solo piano. The Sonata No. 14 is a masterpiece of the 1920s, and the Sonata No. 14 is a masterpiece of the 1930s. Sonata No. 14" was re-recorded in 1992 (on the Erasmus label in the Netherlands), and "Three Piano Pieces D946" was re-recorded in 2005 (on the Wakabayashi Studio label). The balance between the massive, solid construction and spontaneous improvisation is a testament to Medjieva's further evolution and deepening of her playing style. This is a richly poetic double disc set that offers a glimpse into the solitary and sorrowful depths of the mind of Schubert, the genius who passed away at a young age. The music is introspective, harsh, and frightening...one moment it seems to dominate the whole piece, and then it suddenly heals you with a gentle, enveloping sound.Ms. Medjieva makes this opposites music sound beautifully expressive."
