La proie et l'ombre" is the new 2025 release by Catastrophe, a Parisian artist collective that has emerged with the support of key figures in the French music world, including Bertrand Burgala and Etienne Dao. The new album combines the traditions of French pop and mellow downtempo sounds with a hint of psychedelia to create a one-of-a-kind cinematic and avant-garde sound world, a drastic evolution that is now complete! Catastrophe is a French amorphous artist collective whose members include writers and creators from various fields, who made their record debut in 2016. So far, they have left two albums on Bertrand Burgala's Tricatel label. La proie et l'ombre (The Prey and the Shadow) is their third full-length album, their first in five years since 2020's Gong! Once with up to 20 members, this album was made with four core members from the beginning, Carol Tayard Daley, Pierre Jouin, Arthur Naveloux, and Blandine Rinkel. It was produced by the brilliant Jeremy Arcache, who has participated in many productions by Christine and the Queens, Jean Tonic, Clara Luciani, and others.The first single "La proie et l'ombre" opens the album with a romantic melodic sense reminiscent of Sébastien Tellier and psychedelia in the vein of Mountain of One or Bose of Canada. The second single "Sans contact," with its very French melancholy, and the third single "Sauvons-nous," a chic pop number, are also excellent! The band's music is a perfect balance of French musical tradition and modern pop music production, while skillfully editing and mixing various elements such as cinematic, psychedelic, abstract, avant-garde, classical... to create a world of original sound that only Catastrophe can create. Catastrophe creates its own original sound world.
