The history of doo-wop is based on rhythm & blues, which is a mixture of jazz, blues, and gospel, and was born among black musical groups in urban areas such as New York, Detroit, and Chicago after World War II. This style of music, which featured solo vocals backed by rhythmic humming and beautiful chorus work, spawned many vocal groups and gained popularity. This style of music was not limited to black music, but had a great influence on later pop music such as rock and soul music.
