Tomohiko Kira independently produced an LP in 1984, before forming zabadak. Pressed in a limited run of just 100 copies, *Afterthematter* features early versions of “The Ohio Murder Case” and “POLAND”—which would become key parts of zabadak’s repertoire—as well as tracks that would later be incorporated into *The Kingdom of Light*. Yoko Ueno and Katsushi Matsuda also appear on some of the tracks. Although this album was released on CD in 2001, the sound derived from the LP—which had been played until it was worn out—was full of noise, and Kira wrote in the CD liner notes, “I hope you’ll enjoy that as part of its charm.” More than 25 years later, a remastered edition—in which the scratch noise has been removed as much as possible—has been completed under the guidance of Yasushi Utsunomiya, often referred to as a “sound magician.” The remaining LP was digitized using a technique called “underwater playback,” and after five months of manual noise removal and meticulous remastering, the “original sound” that Tomohiko Kira created in the studio has been beautifully recreated. When you play it, please listen closely before the song begins. You should be able to hear a faint sound. Since the original was created by dubbing the tape over and over again, “picking-up sounds”—unintended background noises—remain imprinted like memories between playback and recording.
