Description:

The Queen of Spades" is not Tchaikovsky's opera of the same name, but the ballet "The Queen of Spades," which uses the entirety of Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique" instead. Roland Petit liked the story of people whose fates were turned upside down by the card, and although he once adapted it into a ballet, he was not satisfied with the result. When the Bolshoi Ballet asked him to adapt the story into a ballet, he re-read Pushkin's original story and wrote a new script. He was convinced that the "Pathetique" symphony was the most appropriate for the story, and he created a wonderful ballet. In 1994, Roland Petit presented a ballet with music by Berg, Webern, and Schoenberg at the Opéra de Paris. He proposed that Webern's "Passacaglia," which was a great success, be performed at the Bolshoi. The Bolshoi dancers performed it to the fullest satisfaction of Petit's demands. Naxos Japan
