Description:
Farnace, the protagonist of this opera, is a character who also appears in Mozart’s *Mitridate, King of Pontus*; Mitridate is his father. He was a real king who reigned from around 185 to 160 B.C., and his days were spent entirely in battle. Farnace succeeded his father as King of Pontus and wished to marry Tamiri, the princess of Cappadocia, but Berenice, Tamiri’s mother, would not allow it. This was because, at the end of the war against Mithridates, her husband—the King of Cappadocia—and her son had been killed. However, Pharnaces married Tamiri without Berenice’s permission and has already fathered a child with her. The Kingdom of Pontus is currently under siege by Roman forces, and though Pharnaces launches a final counterattack, he is utterly powerless to make a difference. His wife, Tamiri, hides their child and attempts to take her own life, but her mother, Berenice, appears and stops her. Furthermore, Farnace’s sister, Selinda, attempts to ensure Farnace’s safety by courting Aquilio, a high-ranking officer in the Roman legion, and Gilarde, one of Berenice’s subordinates. Premiered in 1727, this opera seems to reveal a deep family love underlying its political maneuvering and tales of love and hatred. This is evident in Farnace’s love for his own son, and in Berenice’s desire for her daughter’s happiness—even as she cannot forget the grievances held by her husband and son. And, of course, there is the intense love between Farnace and Tamiri. One cannot help but marvel at the skill of Vivaldi (1678–1741), who wove all of this together with beautiful music of breathtaking intensity. With its beautiful staging, flawless singing by Baroque music specialists, and Sardelli’s elegant conducting, this is a production that satisfies in every respect. Naxos Japan
