Always known for his high spirits, Rozhestvensky held the position of principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1978 to 1981, where he captivated audiences with a great deal of exciting repertoire. He has always been fond of the works of British composers and is known for his active promotion of contemporary British music, including the Russian premiere of Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the recording of Vaughan Williams' complete symphonies on the Melodia label, and the premiere of Maxwell Davies' Symphony No. 2. He is also known for his active involvement in the promotion of contemporary British music. This album includes Holst's "The Planets," performed in 1980, and Britten from a performance in Osaka, Japan, during a visit to Japan in 1981. The exciting performance of "The Planets" as well as "Introduction to Orchestral Music for Youth," a first in Rozhestvensky's discography, are performed in a raucous manner, making the most of each instrument's timbral qualities.This is an excellent recording with a wide dynamic range.
