Here are two Oldborough Music Festival videos. The first shows Rostropovich performing at the Oldborough Festival in England in 1968, shortly before he was declared a "dissident" and had his domestic and foreign performance contracts revoked. The Snape Maltings Concert Hall, a converted 19th century malt factory, was inaugurated in 1967, but was destroyed by fire on the first day of the 1969 festival, the year after Rostropovich's performance at the 21st festival. However, it was rebuilt the following year and the opening ceremony was held (a part of the ceremony is included in the bonus track). Britten and Rostropovich had a deep bond, a relationship that changed from time to time, whether as pianist and cellist or as composer and conductor, but the trust continued even after Britten's death.This video is a rare glimpse into their partnership, and it gives us a sense of the close atmosphere between the two musicians. The bonus track "Gloriana" was controversial when it was premiered, but the symphonic suite, including Pears' "Lute Song," provides a great hint of Britten's own approach to the work.
