Description:
John Barbirolli (1899-1970), now considered a genuine English conductor, was actually born to an Italian father and a French mother. He excelled in musical talent from an early age, so much so that in 1916, at the age of 17, he became the youngest cellist in the Queen's Hall Orchestra led by Henry Wood. Thereafter, he played concertos and string quartets, but in 1925, he organized his own chamber orchestra and turned to conducting, and in 1936, he was selected as the principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic (heir to that Toscanini!). From 1961 to 1967, he was the Permanent Conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, conducting romantic works by Brahms, Mahler, Sibelius, and others, and actively promoting British music. He also contributed to the active promotion of British music.Although he is such a great composer, Berlioz is actually his repertoire as well, and two recordings of his Symphonie fantastique with the Halle Orchestra, one in mono from 1947 and the other in early stereo from 1958, are still available. This recording from 1969 is in perfect stereo and, along with the Haydn, is to be commended as a valuable record. Naxos Japan
