Alfred Cortot (1877-1962) was one of the leading pianists of the first half of the 20th century. He was born in Switzerland to a French father and a Swiss mother, and received his musical education from an early age. He made his debut as a pianist at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under the renowned Louis Diémé and established a solid foundation (although he also flunked out of the conservatory). As a young man, he was devoted to Wagner's works, and from 1896 to 1897, he worked as an assistant at the Bayreuth Festival, including as a "chorus and singers' trainer." It is a well-known episode that he eventually became so absorbed in the work that he conducted the French premiere of "Götterdämmerung" as conductor. He then formed the Casals Trio with Jacques Thibaud and Papelo Casals, and enjoyed an outstanding career until the late 1920s.He is also known for his achievements as an educator, and in 1919 he founded the "Ecole Normale Supérieure de Musique" to realize his own ideals, energetically teaching younger students. This series of arrangements was written to build on the "sound technical foundation" that he himself advocated, and it is fair to say that they have a slightly different meaning than the arrangements by Horowitz, which were written to show off his own technical skills.
