Knappertsbusch + Lorenz, flag start...complete first appearance! Wagner at his best: "Tristan und Isolde", Act III, live at the Zurich State Opera, June 5, 1947. After World War II, Knappertsbusch, who was forced to suspend his activities as a Nazi German collaborator for a little over a year, resumed his activities in 1947 after winning a de-Nazification trial. The maestro led the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra in the Zurich June Festival. He will conduct "Tristan und Isolde" and "Götterdämmerung" with an ideal cast of Lorenz's Tristan and Flagstadt's Isolde (stage performance. The production will be directed by Hans Zimmermann, artistic director of the Zurich Opera House.) This is the world premiere of the third act of his "Tristan"! For some reason, only a part of the first act of this performance was available on LP and CD. The Swiss Broadcasting Corporation has only the entire third act in its archives, and no other performances of the other acts are known to exist. Kuna's "Tristan" was performed in its entirety at the Bavarian State Opera in 1950, and there is only a DECCA recording of excerpts. It is a joy to know that a complete live recording of the third act has survived. Lorenz, the great Wagner singer who dominated the world of Wagner singing, is a superhumanly large scale singer. The sound quality is of the same age as the original recording, but some irritating tape noise has been carefully removed.
