The Complete Beethoven Symphonies, a project that took 12 years to complete Antonini, a recorder player and founder of the Italian early music orchestra “Il Giardino Armonico,” has long been known for his innovative interpretations of Baroque music. Since the 2000s, however, he has placed greater emphasis on his work as a conductor and expanded his repertoire to include the Classical period following the Baroque. His recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Basel Chamber Orchestra—where he has served as guest conductor since the 2015–16 season—began with Symphony No. 1, recorded in November 2004, and The first release—a coupling with Symphony No. 2, recorded the following year—was released by the German label “Oehms Classics” and became a bestseller in Japan thanks to its strikingly vivid interpretation, brimming with dramatic contrasts. Starting with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” recorded in 2006, the project switched to the Sony Classical label and proceeded at a deliberate pace—recording roughly one symphony per year in studio sessions—culminating magnificently with Symphony No. 9, “Choral,” recorded in 2016, four years after Symphony No. 8 was recorded in 2012.
