Since winning the 2016 Franz Liszt International Piano Competition, the brilliant pianist Tomoki Sakata has captivated audiences worldwide with his overwhelming technique and rich expressiveness. Released in 2020, his second album, *Illusions*, features eight pieces carefully selected by Sakata based on the concept of “projecting the ‘Illusion’ of various musical ensembles—including symphonies, concertos, art songs, and operas—onto the listener using just ‘10 fingers and 1 piano.’” Sakata has a keen interest not only in piano works but also in orchestral pieces, art songs, and opera. Recorded at his strong request, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, 3rd Movement “Waltz” (arranged by Feinberg—a world premiere recording) and Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique,” 3rd Movement “Scherzo” are exceptionally difficult pieces that could be considered mere theoretical exercises. Listening to these performances, which truly embody the concept of “10 fingers × 1 piano,” one is captivated not only by Sakata’s technique but also by his rich musicality. And then there is Liszt, Sakata’s signature repertoire. Featuring the Rigoletto Paraphrase and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, his performance—which sings with ease while remaining intellectually structured—is simply breathtaking.
