A collection of stereo live performances of Mravinsky's visit to Japan. Glazunov was the director of the Petersburg Conservatory when he was a student there. The fact that Mravinsky was to perform the work of his great benefactor in Japan, a country to which he is dearly attached, must have filled him with a sense of deep emotion. However, on the day of the performance, two members of the orchestra defected in a hurry. The difference from the monaural recording of 1968 is obvious: the delicate nuances unique to the composer are captured. One of Glazunov's admirers said, "I'd like to keep this on my altar. This one is enough for me even if I have to throw away everything else. Sleep," his first musical experience at the Mariinsky Theatre when he was six years old, was the work that decided his future, so to speak. Despite its importance, there was only an SP reissue in 1948, and I had not been able to listen to it properly until now. The performance was simply amazing.The percussion explosion in the introduction and the famous waltz opening are more intense and huge than any of the Russian conductors. Rare is the Chayko who is so free from sweetness. The Altus reissue is superb, with sound quality approaching that of the 1973 "Revolution," not to mention a series of Society Series. You cannot talk about Mravinsky, or any classical music, without hearing this.
