Description:
A gem of folk-psychedelic music released on a minor Canadian label, just for Van Morrison lovers and those in the know, is now available on CD for the first time (original release: 1975/MASCANTA MUSIC)! Canadian singer/songwriter Calum Mascarenhas released this disc in 1975, and it is one of the most underrated private pressings of the 70s. The roots-rock sound is backed by a jazz-like beat, and some of the songs, including the laid-back vocals, are reminiscent of "Tupelo Honey"-era Van Morrison. He wrote/arranged/produced the music, and Dale Russell is credited as co-producer/arranger. Dave Russell, still active as a musician, producer, and songwriter, is a well-known figure in Canada (he was a member of the Guess Who from 1983 to 2000). The recordings were made at Lord Recording Studios in Winnipeg, Manitoba, central Canada. Russell and a group of musicians from the Winnipeg area were assembled as backing musicians. The core of the group is Glenn Hall (saxophone), a multi-instrumentalist who represents the Canadian jazz scene.In the early 70's, he formed the jazz quartet "Whole Life Communication Orchestra," whose members Ian Gardiner, Jim Hillman, and Mark Rutherford are all featured on this album. The second album, "Mother of the Book," which featured legendary arranger/composer Gil Evans, was critically acclaimed from all quarters.
