Washout, a project by chillwave pioneer Ernest Greene, has completed a new album. Completely self-produced and mixed by Nathan Boddy (James Blake, Mula Masa) and David Wrench (Caribou, Florence and the Machine), their fifth album, Notes from a Quiet Life, is released.Washed Out's music has always floated above timeless frontiers. Ernest Greene's transcendent output has been called the "Godfather of Chillwave" by Pitchfork, and "Portlandia" ( American TV series) borrowed his track "Feel It All Around" as the theme song for Utopia.Washed Out's latest release, Notes From a Quiet Life, comes after more than a decade of delivering distinctive and varied creative re-creations at a remarkably high level. The album is intuitive and bold: Greene has moved away from the treadmill of music as a business, giving way instead to his artistic interests. A Georgia native, he left Atlanta in 2021 to return to the countryside where he has been familiar since childhood. Once a voracious escapist, he is now enamored with the wonders of reality around him. I once read that every five, or even ten years, you literally become a different person on a cellular level. What you are going through will eventually change you. This album is a reflection of that. My experiments with painting and sculpture help my music. They influence each other. It was a kind of realization for me. I don't want to look back on my life one day and think, 'Oh, it was all about maximizing productivity. I want to enjoy this," Greene explains.That pure vision is what makes Notes From a Quiet Life so powerful. This is the first album Greene has completely self-produced, with mixing assistance from Nathan Boddy (James Blake, Mura Masa) and David Wrench (Caribou, Florence + the Machine).
