Aza Roots
Description:
Roots music that crosses the border between Taiwan, Japan, and Brazil Grow Deep, Fly High. Stretching deep into the roots, the music flutters high in the sky. Aza Roots is a musical unit that resonates freely across genres, languages, and borders, while being rooted in the land and memories. The members are Eri Liao, a singer with roots in the Tayal tribe of Taiwan and Japan; Marcelo Kimura, a Japanese-Brazilian guitarist from São Paulo, Brazil, who leads the diverse samba/jazz scene; and Falcon, a Japanese guitarist and composer. Falcon, a Japanese guitarist and composer. Their different roots brought them together in Tokyo, a city with a diverse mix of music. The music that sprouted from this crossroads melds their respective cultural and musical backgrounds and resonates across genres, languages, and national borders, creating a Creole sound that is "of this time. The opening song "Aguas de Marco" is a unique cover of Antonio Carlos Jobim's famous song with lyrics in Skikun Atayal, a language spoken in the Four Seasons Village of Datong Township, Yilan County, Taiwan. The arrangements were created by Marcelo Kimura, and while maintaining the fresh flow of the original songs, together with Eli's lyrics and Falcon's floating soundscapes, they have been transformed into a sound world that breathes and rhythms unique to Aza Roots. The album includes "Marko" and "Retratos," in which Brazilian rhythms intersect with Portuguese, Four Seasons Tayal, and Japanese lyrics; "Noto Mugiyabushi," a reinterpretation of a folk song from the Monzenmachi district of Wajima City; "ZABUMBANGER," which explodes with a guitar duet; and "Aza Roots," a song about a Japanese colony in Taiwan that was once a multilingual musician. The album also includes "Taragai Drifting Light (LIVE)," which is steeped in the sense of multilingual coexistence in Taiwan, once a colony of Japan. The songs do not "belong" to any one culture or history, but rather branch out from the roots of each of the three members and spread their wings as a new kind of folklore, rooted in the current era. The unit name "Aza" means "wings" in Portuguese.
