This is addictive. George Antile, who will celebrate the 70th anniversary of his death in 2019, is famous for his avant-garde style in works such as "Ballet Mechanique" and "Airplane Sonata," but in later years he returned to more traditional writing styles and also did a lot of film music. In later years, however, he returned to more traditional writing styles and composed many film scores. The four violin sonatas that remain are cool and exciting in the way they boldly challenge new forms of expression while just barely maintaining tonality. The cold, mechanical movements, the hot energy that makes them continuous, and the thrilling speed of the odd time signatures are all interesting aspects of Antheil's music. The percussive No. 1 (1923), No. 2 (1923), which promotes the expression of Dadaism and Cubism, and No. 3 (1924), which transforms itself into neoclassical style, remind us of Stravinsky's influence. No. 4 (1948), written after the war, is about 25 years removed from the first three, and its music is closer to Prokofiev and Shostakovich. Each of these unique works has its own characteristics and a feel that cannot be heard anywhere else.It is a valuable recording that I am grateful to be able to listen to all together.
