"He began playing the piano at age 7 and studied under the Russian pianist Vitali Margulis. Starting in 1981, he competed in numerous international competitions and achieved outstanding results.” This is a typical biographical sketch of a renowned pianist, but what drew the most attention to Bernd Gremzer was that in 1989, while he was still a student teacher at the Freiburg University of Music, he was suddenly appointed a professor at the Saarland School of Music. This established him as “Germany’s youngest university professor,” and his talent gained widespread recognition. He has a broad repertoire, specializing particularly in technically demanding works, and has released over 30 CDs to date. Starting with his recordings of Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev for NAXOS, each of these releases has received high praise. Now, he presents to the world Chopin’s Ballades and Scherzos. These two sets of works, composed during Chopin’s middle to late periods, are strikingly similar in terms of technical difficulty and expressive style. Perhaps because the total running time is ideal for a CD release, they are frequently recorded together. Each piece possesses its own narrative quality and demands a wide range of expressive skills, making this collection a perfect fit for the highly accomplished Gremzer. Sony Music
