THEO'JAYS, a soul trio from Ohio, have carved their name into the history of soul music as a group that epitomizes Philly soul. Though they have enjoyed a remarkably long career under the name THEO'JAYS since the 1960s, they have now released their first new original studio album in about 15 years, *THELASTWORD*. According to the members, this album will be THEO'JAYS’ “final album.” That “final album,” *THELASTWORD*. The nine tracks on this album are brimming with masterful vocal work and soul—just as they were on their classic albums from the ’70s and ’80s. As for why they decided to return to the studio and produce a “final album,” leader Eddie Levart explains: “It was kind of on my bucket list.” He continues: “I wanted to make a great O’Jays album from start to finish. This project is exactly what made that happen.” Another original member, Walter Williams, takes an even bolder view. “We just wanted one more hit album,” he says thoughtfully. “We wanted to grab the world’s attention—and the music industry’s, too. Since we can still perform just as well, whether live or on an album, we want to compete with the young artists who are making waves on the scene right now. The music industry should give The O’Jays more recognition, because we paved the way for many of the artists who are enjoying great success today.” However, this album is more than just the “final album” from a legendary R&B/soul group with a 60-year career. In other words, even as the latest album from active veteran R&B/soul artists, it displays a level of polish that is more than capable of resonating with the scene. The uplifting “I Got You,” released as a lead single, is a song by indie blue-eyed soul singer-songwriter Michael Bloom. The O'Jays have added gorgeous Gamble & Huff-style orchestration to it, crafting a track reminiscent of classic Philly soul. Then, in the soulful “Stand Up,” which opens with gospel-style piano, they appeal to listeners regarding the spread of gun violence, urging, “If you have a conscience, stand up!” They also perform a minimalist arrangement of their own 1967 single, “I’ll Be Sweeter Tomorrow [Than I Was Today].” Among the album’s tracks, the one likely to attract the most attention is “Enjoy Myself,” a collaboration with Bruno Mars that’s already generating buzz everywhere. Then there’s “Above the Law,” featuring Betty Wright and Angelo Morris, which delivers a scathing social message. This song, which raises an urgent voice of protest against greedy elites, racial and class inequality, and corrupt politicians, embodies the spirit of a soul legend who has been stirring not only dance floors but also people’s hearts since the 1960s. While this album, *THELASTWORD*, may indeed be their “final album,” the legend of the O’Jays is far from over—!
