The chorus, which is said to have originated in the ancient Greek theater of "choros," has evolved in various ways, especially in Europe. The monophony of only one voice, as seen in Gregorian chant, gradually developed into complex polyphony sung by magnificent multiple voices, reaching its ultimate limit in the 16th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many composers wrote not only religious works but also secular choral works, and in the 19th and 20th centuries, another genre of fusion was developed. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the choral music underwent a remarkable development, combining with other genres. This album is a collection of masterpieces by one of the finest vocal ensembles of our time, the Bavarian Radio Choir. From Bach to Pärt, the composers span a gap of some 300 years, but all of them follow the style of their time and are sung in a close-knit sound that evokes the traditions of European choral culture.Peter Dijkstra, who conducts most of the pieces on this album, is a conductor from the Netherlands who has led local choirs since he was a young man and attracted attention when he became director of the Swedish Radio Choir in his 20s. In 2005, he became Artistic Director of the Bavarian Radio Chorus. Recently, he has also been active as an orchestra conductor. He is expected to play an even more active role in the future.
