Description:

Bernd Alois Zimmermann! Two symphonies once premiered by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra! Two symphonies by B.A. Zimmermann, once premiered by the Rundfunk Symphonieorchester Cologne live! The first draft version of the "Symphony in One Movement" and the "Vocal Symphony", a concert version of the difficult opera "Soldiers"! The 18th album on the bastille musique label features two symphonies by Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918-1970), a German contemporary composer known for his unique style and difficult compositions. The first, "Symphony in One Movement," was originally commissioned by the Northwest German Radio (NWDR) in Cologne and was composed for various percussion instruments, harp, and organ, and was performed by the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne on May 5, 2018, It was completed as a single-movement symphony for large orchestra including various percussion instruments, harp, and organ, and premiered in 1952 by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Hans Rothbout. However, the premiere was severely criticized for the inclusion of the organ, which was considered archaic, and Zimmermann, with the help of Rothbout, was forced to revise the work, removing the organ and rewriting long, complex measures. The second work, "Vocal Symphony," is a 40-minute concert version of the music for the opera "Soldiers," one of the most difficult operas of the 20th century. The premiere of this work was also given by the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Cologne, with six singers and orchestra performing the music of the first and second acts, condensed into a six-part form. In addition to a 64-page bilingual booklet (English and German) with commentary on the work and interviews, a leaflet printed with photographs of the composer, live performances, and autograph materials is included.
