At 95 years old (as of 2022), Herbert Blomstedt is the longest serving conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and is also well known as its honorary conductor. His musicality is often imagined to be stoic due to his appearance and vegetarianism, but in fact, it is a straightforward and rigid style supported by lively rhythms and a strict sense of form. The orchestra builder's ability is also extraordinary. This is the last of the "fine music" that can be heard on this album. This 5-CD set is a gem from his tenure as Chief Conductor (Kapellmeister) of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1998 to 2005. This was the first authorized recording of Bruckner's Third and Brahms' Second. Reger has been in the orchestra's repertoire since Konwitschny. The Mendelssohn is the world premiere recording in the new Breitkopf cycle.Other interesting selections include Beethoven and Nielsen, which are his 18th favorites.
