Description:
The second in the series of music associated with Esterházy, an oratorio written by Haydn's predecessor Gregor Josef Werner (1693-1766), a composer who was the court music director of the Esterházy family from 1728 until his death. The subject matter of his oratorio "The Good Shepherd" (Der gute Hirt) is in the Viennese tradition, music about the death and burial of Jesus Christ, a popular topic at the time. The content is based on the Bible and the text was compiled by Werner himself. The parable Christ told about the "Good Shepherd," a man who desperately tries to find one of his sheep if he loses sight of it, refers to a sinner who is lost and to God who finds and forgives him. The score is now preserved in the Hungarian National Library in Budapest. King International
