Many first time recordings! Christa Ludwig is one of the most famous mezzo-sopranos of the second half of the 20th century. She was born in Berlin, but loved the Vienna State Opera so much that she continued to perform there for a long time. These three CDs contain various live performances from 1955 to 1994, the year of her retirement. In addition, many of the recordings are being presented for the first time. Most noteworthy is the 1968 performance of "The Knight of Roses" conducted by Bernstein. The recording runs a full 24 minutes from the monologue by the Marshaless in the first act to the end of the opera. Also, "Macbeth," conducted by Böhm, includes three scenes totaling approximately 20 minutes. The "Elektra," in which Clytemnestra sings so majestically that it is hard to believe that she is retiring from the opera stage. In addition, there is a rare recording of Rossini's "Cenerentola" and a recording of Ludwig's brief period as a dramatic soprano, making this a very satisfying recording even for Ludwig fans.
