The Orchestre National de l'Opéra de Paris proudly presents a new recording of two Shostakovich viola sonatas by soloist Pierre Lenère and world-famous piano player Elianne Reyer. The most remarkable feature of this album is the Cello Sonata in D minor, which Lenère himself arranged for viola and piano with the permission of Shostakovich's wife! The cello and viola have the same string arrangement and both have a deep tone quality. Despite the difference in register, the viola solo performance is surprisingly comfortable, perhaps because the original piece has a strong impression of superb technique that makes full use of the cello's high register. The viola used by Lenère has a very deep tone, and the melody in the upper register is pleasant to the ear, giving the impression of further refinement while maintaining the atmosphere of the original piece. This album also includes Shostakovich's last work, the Viola Sonata.Renard, who is so large that his viola looks small, plays dynamically, and his passionate performance of the superb technical parts is breathtaking. Reyer's piano accompaniment is also excellent, and you can listen to the two outstanding ensembles with ease. King International
