With releases on Method808 and FutureClassic, a major collaboration with Chloe Caillet, and an official remix for Fatboy Slim under their belt, the rising star PPJ is entering a new phase. Their style, which spans global street sounds from neo-peleo to Miami bass, has been updated and refined! Centered around the charismatic vocalist Paula and with sound production by Povoa (who has garnered support from FourTet, BenUFO, and BarryCan’tSwim, and whose recent release on LiveFromEarth is still fresh in our minds), this duo operates in a “maximalist” mode characterized by playfulness, sensuality, and a touch of madness. Their new EP, *JOKER*, takes as its theme the figure of the “Joker” found in playing cards and carnival culture. It is humorous, eerie, alluring, and unpredictable—a figure that perfectly embodies their very DNA. While this work takes a more club-music-oriented approach, it doesn’t soften their edges; rather, it amplifies their unique character even further. The emotional core of the album is “Coeur,” a collaboration with Chloe Caillet. Beginning with an MPB-style foundation reminiscent of bossa nova and enveloped in a sunset-like atmosphere unique to Brazil, the track gradually accelerates, transforming into a dancefloor-ready electronic track. With its warm percussion, supple bassline, and Paula’s vocals hovering between intimacy and seduction, it creates a sense of tension—a romantic yet somehow precarious track. (1/2)
