Timothy Ridout, the young prodigy of the viola, records Franck’s Sonata! Overwhelmingly rich expression and musicality Timothy Ridout (born 1995), Britain’s young prodigy of the viola, is releasing an album centered on Franck’s Violin Sonata that depicts the tightly knit world of musicians in Paris from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Regarding Franck’s Sonata, Ridout notes that within a sound world that is both violin-like and cello-like, the viola possesses a unique voice all its own, making it a work ideally suited to the instrument. The album also features three original compositions and a selection of Fauré’s songs. In 1886, Franck wrote a violin sonata as a wedding gift for Ysaÿe. Ysaÿe later dedicated his own Unaccompanied Sonata No. 3 to Enescu. Then, in 1906, Enescu composed *Concertstück* for the Paris Conservatory entrance exams, commissioned by Fauré, who was then the director of the conservatory. Honoré’s *Concert Piece* was also composed for the same exam (1904). Busser, who studied organ with Franck, composed *Appassionato* (1910) for the Paris Conservatory during Fauré’s tenure as director. HARMONIAMUNDI
