This remarkable project focuses on recordings of works written between 1823 and 1828, Schubert's last years. The first volume, "The Beautiful Water Mill Girl" (HMM-902720), was completed in 1823. This second volume features masterpieces composed in 1824 and 1825. At this time, Schubert's fame in Vienna was slowly but steadily rising, and he was at the height of his powers as an artist. But perhaps 1824 was Schubert's darkest period. His friends had left Vienna, he was depressed, diagnosed with an incurable disease, and, worse of all, despondent. But in 1825, a light shone on Schubert's life. During the summer he traveled throughout Austria with his friend, singer Johann Michael Fogle, and felt his strength and hope return.Hasselhorn and Buschakevich continue with the first installment, shedding light on each work from a unique perspective and taking us on a wonderful journey from darkness to light.
