Description:
The young cellist Bruno Philippe, who was born in 1993, is challenging Russian works on his third disc. This time, the two Russian cello sonatas by Myaskovsky and Rachmaninoff are the main selections. Myaskovsky's Cello Sonata No. 1, written in 1911 and revised 20 years later, is full of romantic melodies and Russian fervor that one would not expect from a 20th century work. Like Rachmaninoff's sonatas, it requires a deep sense of song, but Philippe, who also studied with Geringas, has mastered the Russian cello style of the Rostropovich school, and the beauty of the richly sung melodies is intoxicating. The piano in each piece is carefully written, and here Jérôme Ducrot provides excellent support. He has been noted as a great partner of Philippe Jaroussky and Renaud Capuçon, but he is a veteran who will surely become a master accompanist in the 21st century. What a treat to hear the solo interspersed with Rachmaninoff's famous "bell" prelude in C-sharp minor. King International
