Description:

Many pieces are being released on CD for the first time! Compilation of recordings by famous British conductors from SP to LP recordings British conductor Malcolm Sargent's recordings for Decca, from SP to LP recordings, are now available together in a 16-CD box set. It includes many recordings that are being recorded on CD for the first time. Sargent began recording for Decca immediately after the war, when he was already a conductor with extensive experience in the studio. Some of the 78 rpm recordings in this set, symphonies by Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert, as well as overtures by Rossini and Suppé, have never been reissued. These recordings reveal how outspoken and unpretentious Sargent was as a conductor, and his ability to lead an orchestra to a high technical standard. He also conducted energetically in English music such as Holst's The Planets, Elgar's Enigma Variations and The Coronation March. And his concerto recordings with Clifford Curzon, Max Rostal, Ida Handel, and Ruggiero Ricci prove that Sargent was highly regarded as a "sympathetic accompanist."It includes a rare 1946 recording of Handel's arias and choruses with Kathleen Ferrier, as well as a live recording with Ferrier of Brahms' Four Solemn Songs, arranged by Sargent himself. Also included are Decca re-recordings of "The Guards at the Tower of London" and "Princess Ida" from Sullivan & Gilbert's operas, which Sargent loved throughout his life, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with top-notch singers including Elizabeth Harwood and Donald Adams. Sargent was highly praised by prominent foreign musicians such as Schnabel and Toscanini. This collection of recordings will reveal the reasons for that acclaim. The booklet includes an essay by David Patmore, which describes Sargent's early career as an organist and his rapid emergence as a conductor in his twenties. Newly remastered. Original jacket. Please note that some of the recordings may have been omitted from the album, even though it is claimed to be a complete collection. Universal Music/IMS
