Kazuki Tomokawa

Description:

An'archives releases Hanabi, a compilation album of songs by legendary Japanese folk singer, actor, and author Kazuki Tomokawa, on LP. Hanabi is a selection from Tomokawa's three most recent albums, Vengeance Bourbon (2014), Gleaming Crayon (2016), and Going To Buy Squid (2024), all released in Japan only on the Modest Launch (2016) and "Going To Buy Squid" (2024), both of which are available in Japan only on the Modest Launch label. Collecting highlights from these three masterful albums, Hanabi features 10 songs of overwhelming intensity that bring Tomokawa to the peak of his ecstasy after only 60 years of his musical career. Tomokawa's life is a story of change, risk, and commitment. in the early 1970s, he burst onto the Japanese folk music scene, performing at a number of important events, including the legendary Folk Music Jamboree in 1971. in the late 1970s, he released five superb albums, and in 1971 he was a member of the Japan Folk Music Society, His music, which vacillated between pensive melancholy and righteous indignation, cemented his reputation as a majestic and lyrical singer-songwriter and performer.Although his recording activities stalled in the 1980s as he became immersed in theater, acting, and painting, his connection with the prestigious Japanese label P.S.F. led to a phenomenal series of album releases in the 1990s and 2000s. Some of these albums featured longtime collaborators Toshiaki Ishizuka (Head Police) and Motoharu Yoshizawa (Double Bass Improviser), as well as other free jazz musicians. This spirit can be glimpsed in the songs on "Hanabi," with Tomokawa's passionate vocals and guitar swimming and swaying in a drifting string arrangement on "Night Play," which has a more romantic sensibility. The intensity of "To The Dead Man" is further enhanced by the guest appearance of up-and-coming free jazz player Harutaka Mochizuki on saxophone. The two compete with each other, with Hiromichi Sakamoto's cello and electronics swirling beneath the surface. For those who have missed Tomokawa's three albums over the past 15 years (not surprising, given the relative difficulty of obtaining them outside of Japan), Hanabi is the perfect way to reacquaint yourself with one of Japan's most poetic and outlandish folk singers and songwriters. It is a perfect work to get to know again one of Japan's most poetic and outlandish folk singers and songwriters. As Michel Henrizzi states in his typically insightful liner notes, which capture the dreamy and unique spirit of Tomokawa's songs, he is truly "a poet who cuts through the darkness and shadows with his songs and casts the ashes of lives lost to the wind to our fellow man."
