The elite of the hard bop scene gathers for a series of solos. The intoxicating mix of cool and funky improvisation will envelop your whole body and give you the most relaxing feeling. Speaking of European trumpeters, there is Jimmy Duker in the UK, Alan Botchinski in Denmark, Oscar Valdanbrini and Nunzio Rotondo in Italy, and Roger Guerin in France. The quintet was recorded with Benny Golson and Bobby Timmons, who were in France at the time as touring members of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. The members of the quintet seem to be in a relaxed mood, and the leader Roger Guerin's melodious ad-libs are especially wonderful. Moanin'" and "Blues March" sound surprisingly different when compared to the Messengers' Blue Note recording of the same year.The way Guerin, Golson, and Timmons weave lyrical melodies with a moderately cooled-down funkiness is unique to this work, and is probably the reason why it has always been a popular title. After this, Golson and Timmons left recordings on a series of masterful recordings like a glittering star in the late 50s, and it is clear that this work is nothing compared to those works, and it is one that should be listened to more widely. Except for a very hard-to-find original recording, I have only been able to listen to it on reissued LPs, which were not of the highest quality, but I was astonished when I heard the reissued CD. When I asked Sawano Kobo, "Does the original version have such a great sound? The answer was a simple, "Yes, it is. I asked Sawano Kobo if the original CDs sounded that great, and he answered simply, "Yes. No wonder the original recordings are rare and expensive. (Text by Katsuhiko Nakano from liner notes)
