Sol Gavetta revives the "first female cellist" led by Paganini in the cello world. In this new album, Sol Gabetta shines the spotlight on Lise Cristiani (1825-1853), the first woman cellist to perform in public. On the occasion of the bicentennial of Lise Cristiani's birth in December 2025, Sol Gabetta pays tribute to this great pioneer in the history of music with this new album released on Sony Classical. As the first female cellist to have the courage and opportunity to perform in front of an audience, Cristiani defied the social conventions of her time and became a role model for generations of female musicians. In recent years, Sol Gabetta has worked with musicologists to explore the fascinating and tragically short life of Cristiani and to reconstruct her musical repertoire. This album takes the listener on a fascinating journey of cello virtuosity and Romanticism through works by cello virtuosos who were close friends of Cristiani's.Cristiani was inspired by his contemporaries, cellists and composers Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880), Alexandre Batta (1816-1902), and Adrienne François Servais (1807-1866), who brought the rich expressiveness of the cello to a wide audience Jacques Offenbach, for example, was a cellist of the highest caliber. For example, Jacques Offenbach dedicated works such as "Prayer and Bolero," Op. 22, and "Musette," Op. 24, to Cristiani for her debut performance in Paris, and Alexandre Batta offered his own works and arrangements, among them Cristiani's Among them, Cristiani loved the cello trio based on Rossini's "William Tell". Cristiani then traveled to St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Kiev, following in the footsteps of the Belgian cellist Adrienne François Servais, then known as the "Paganini of the cello world.Selvi held legendary status at the time, and his three works that cemented his status, "Memories at the Spa," Op.2, "Fantasy on Two Russian Tunes," Op.13, and "Count Ory's Fantasies," Op.3, are also included on this album. Gioachino Rossini was also a great admirer of Selvi, and together they premiered his own work, "A Drop of Tears: Theme and Variations. Inspired by this exceptional musician, Sol Gavetta, together with the string ensemble Capella Gavetta, which he formed with his violinist brother Andres Gavetta, has recorded a cello and string ensemble and a romantic masterpiece for cello and piano.
