Martin Stadtfeldt, who began playing the piano at the age of six and gave his first recital at the age of nine, became the youngest and the first German to win the International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig in 2002. Since then, he has been active as a "Bach virtuoso," and his "Goltberg Variations" in 2004 topped the German classical CD album charts. In recent years, his performances of Romantic works have also attracted much attention. The album "Christmas Piano," released in 2021, features Stadtfeld's own arrangements of famous European Christmas melodies for piano and clavichord, and he has added his own meditative compositions to give us a taste of his Christmas imagination. This special album features a collection of the most beautiful and beloved German folk songs, newly arranged by himself. Timeless melodies such as "Die Gedanken sind frei," "Geh aus mein Herz," "Der Mai ist gekommen," and "Guter Mond" have been familiar to generations. The arrangements are also characterized by the use of the old passacaglia form (a three-beat tune in which the same note form is repeated in the lower part of the voice and variations are made in the upper part) in various parts.Also included is an arrangement of "Guter Mond" with his student, Bella Precht, for piano continuo. In addition, he expresses his personal feelings about the theme of the piece at the beginning and at the end of the piece, making some of the pieces feel very close to the music of the great composer. Listeners who are familiar with the works may recognize? The music also weaves together melodies from Mozart and Beethoven that listeners who are familiar with the works might recognize. The series continues Schutzfeldt's tradition of arranging traditional pieces for the piano, incorporating melodies by Handel, Beethoven, Schumann, and others for which he has been well-known.
