Joe Satriani's 17th studio album in two years, "Shapeshifting" Joe Satriani's 17th studio album in two years, "Shapeshifting" will be released. Shapeshifting was co-produced by Satriani and Jim Scott (Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) and mastered by John Cuniberti. Satriani sought the help of a wide range of collaborators, both old and new, to bring the songs to life. Drum legend Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty), bassist Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction), and keyboardist Eric Codew form the core of the album, while Lisa Coleman (The Revolution) and actor, director, and screenwriter Christopher Guest also contributed to the production. The retro-sounding first single, "Nineteen Eighty," revisits, in a spiritual sense, the days of The Squares, Satriani's first band. He says that early in his career he "tried to create a cooler, new-wave vibe with less guitar solos and theatrics."Now, decades after leaving those goals, he has attempted to re-create what he envisioned back in 1980. He even used a vintage MXR EVH phaser to stay true to the sound of that time. I've always been a big Eddie Van Halen fan," Satriani said. "In my mind, he's the one who crystallized that era. In the late '70s and '80s, he was kind of the savior of rock guitar. I wanted to do something like that myself."
