Description:
Master musician Heinz Holliger and the Basel Chamber Orchestra complete the unprecedented "Schubert: Complete Symphonies". Finally, "Unfinished" appears! A world-renowned oboe player, a composer with his own unique language, and an outstanding conductor who is able to find new beauty in old works - Heinz Holliger has been in the spotlight for the past few years for his diverse activities as a multi-instrumentalist. Heinz Holliger will turn 80 in 2019, and in the fall of the same year, he will hold a concert in Japan to celebrate his 80th birthday, which will be the culmination of his musical activities. It is still fresh in our memories that he has performed. This album is the fifth and final installment of the complete Schubert symphony recordings with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, which began in 2018 with "Great" to celebrate Holliger's 80th birthday in May 2019. The previous four works have been critically acclaimed by FONOFORUM and GRAMOPHONE magazines, receiving the highest scores for both performance and recording, and the Japanese release of "The Great" was selected as a "Record Geijutsu" Special Mention.Holliger described the qualities of Schubert's symphonies as "music that, like Mahler's, has a lovely sound and a worldliness that is like drinking wine in a Viennese tavern, but in a moment of horrific death. He points out that "bright colors are always next to darkness and abysses," and emphasizes that the use of period instruments by different instruments allows for "transparency and shadows of sound" to be achieved. In the final volume of the complete works, Holliger finally arrives at Schubert's most profound work, the "Unfinished Symphony," a highly individual musical combination. The Unfinished Symphony features only the two movements that Schubert completed, while the album centers on the enigmatic septet that Schubert wrote when he was 16 years old--known as "Schubert's Funeral Music" or "Little Funeral Music"--which is also the title of the album. --The album is a masterpiece of the young composer's own writing, and the album is a masterpiece of the young composer. The album opens and closes with the "Andante" and the "German Dances" arranged by Moser and Webern, respectively.
