This is a collection of masterful performances on a 2020 remastered recording by John Barbirolli, a master conductor who made Elgar's music his special mission in life and did everything in his power to make it known throughout the world. Barbirolli began his career as a cellist, and in 1921 Barbirolli performed "Elgar: Cello Concerto" under Elgar's direction. At Elgar's urging, he turned to conducting and established himself as a conductor in England in his 20s. After Elgar's death, Barbirolli made Elgar's music his special mission in life and vowed to do his utmost to make it known throughout the world. The performances recorded here allow us to judge how well he kept that promise. In particular, the stereo recordings of Elgar's performances for the old EMI are still very popular today, as they are all oozing with rich emotion. The "Cello Concerto" with Jacqueline du Pré, "Enigma Variations," and "Symphony," which are famous as eternal masterpieces, as well as his sense of playing even the march "Dignity" with rich shading, and all of his performances bring shadows to life in various places.
