Janacek (1854-1928)
Description:
With his Czech choir and the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the different, smart but original and huge Glagolitic Mass Janacek completed "Glagolitic Mass" in 1927, when he was 73 years old. His non-religious style, he said, "shows people how to talk to God. "The success of his third opera, "Jenufa," in 1916 triggered tremendous creativity, and in the last decade of his life Janacek composed more important operas, dying in 1928. The text of "Glagolitic Mass" is in Ancient Church Slavonic, the ancient liturgical language of the composer's native Moravia. The Glagolitic alphabet refers to the florid script originally used to write Ancient Church Slavonic. There were only two performances of the work in Janacek's lifetime; when it premiered in Brno in December 1927, Janacek did not attend all rehearsals of the Mass because he was concentrating on his last opera, From the House of the Dead. The work's complex and innovative score, with appropriate simplifications and changes to adaptations, was reflected in the "standard edition" published in 1929. This recording uses the Critical Revision, published in 2011 by Czech musicologist Izy Zahradka, and is performed in a nine-movement version with the intrada placed first. This is described as true to Janacek's passionate spirit and his adventurous vision of the Mass.Completed in 1926, the five-movement "Sinfonietta" is one of Janacek's most popular works, beginning with an impressive fanfare of nine trumpets, two tenor tubas, two bass trumpets, and timpani. Retonja, who conducts here, was born in Slovenia in 1961. He studied at the Vienna State University of Music with Otmar Suitner and others, was principal conductor of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra from 1996 to 2002, principal conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra from 2003 to 2006, and artistic director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from 2011 to the end of 2018, From 2012 to 2021, he was music director of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, a group of four young soloists (the tenor and baritone are from the Czech Republic), the Brno Czech Philharmonic Choir from Janacek's home town, and the Strasbourg Philharmonic's disciplined and dynamic The fusion of these three musicians creates a different, smart, but original, huge musical world.
