The leading cellist of the new generation, the talented and handsome popular Gautier Capuçon, has recorded a full-length collection of Beethoven's Sonatas & Variations with his close friend Braley, which is considered the high peak of cello works and the new translation of the Bible of cello works. Beethoven's five cello sonatas are still highly regarded as brilliant milestones in the history of cello works, and are often called the "new translation of the Bible of cello works" in contrast to Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello, which is called the Old Testament of cello works. The two pieces in Op. 5 were written by a young Beethoven, a young man full of ambition. Op. 69, No. 3, was written in 1808, around the same time as the "Destiny" and "Rural" symphonies. The two works of Op. 102 were written in 1815, when Beethoven was approaching the end of his life. The works were written in the early, middle, and late stages of Beethoven's life as a musician. They were all composed for the most famous musicians of his day. The "Judas of Maccabeus" Variation is based on Handel's "Behold, the Brave Return," which is still used in sports awards ceremonies today.The seven variations on "The Magic Flute" are based on the theme of "The Men Who Know Love," a duet between a man and a woman from Mozart's opera, and the twelve variations on the theme of the aria "Daughter or Woman" by the male actor.
