Of Tchaikovsky's three great ballets, "The Nutcracker" is the most popular among music fans. Based on the fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the genius of German late Romantic fantasy literature, this ballet is one of Tchaikovsky's most inspired masterpieces, directly conveying the original fantasy's unique flavor, as evidenced by the high frequency of performances of the suite version. However, the complete work contains many fascinating musical elements not heard in the suite version, and is especially impressive when interpreted by a conductor who excels at recreating the drama. Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker performed Act II of "The Nutcracker" at the 2009 Sylvester Concert, which was a big hit due to the excellence of the performance. In addition to the performance of the second act, this album features a new recording of the first act to complete the complete work. The English boys' choral group Rivera participates in the ninth and final song of Act I, "Snow Chorus. Rattle is famous for his keen sense of rhythm and mastery of orchestral control that makes each instrument sound expressive, and in "The Nutcracker," these qualities work effectively, so that the Berlin Philharmonic's advanced technique makes "The Nutcracker" a brilliant performance full of fantasy down to the smallest detail.
