A collection of Beethoven's works for flute by Emmanuel Payu, Barenboim, Daishin Kashimoto and others. Both Daniel Barenboim and Emmanuelle Payu are important musicians in Berlin. Barenboim is the music director of the Berlin State Opera and Payu is the principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic. This Beethoven chamber music program with flute was recorded in June 2020 in Berlin's newest concert hall, the 700-seat oval-shaped Pierre Boulez Saal, designed by Frank Gehry and Nagata Acoustic Design, which opened in 2017. It was also one of the festivals specially conceived for online under pandemic conditions, and it was in this hall, where distance and intimacy were valued, that they performed. This Beethoven album, the last on Warner Classics in honor of the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth, features four other distinguished performers besides Barenboim and Payu, who play the piano here. Violinist Daishin Kashimoto is concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. Amihai Gross, founding member of the Jerusalem String Quartet and currently principal viola of the Berlin Philharmonic. Sophie Delvaux, formerly of the Berlin Philharmonic and currently principal bassoonist of the Vienna Philharmonic.Sylvia Caleddu, principal flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic, joins the ensemble. The works recorded here consist of fascinating pieces from Beethoven's early years: the Trio WoO 37, written in the mid-1780s. Duet for two flutes WoO 26" from 1792, just before Beethoven left Bonn for Vienna; "Serenade in D major, Op. 25" from around 1800; "Violin Sonata No. 8, Op. 30-3" from 1802, here arranged for violin and piano by Emmanuel Pajou The arrangement is for violin and piano, and is performed by Payu himself. The variety of skill and expression of Payu's flute, and its exquisite interplay with Barenboim's piano. And the ensemble is beautifully made up of like-minded members. Warner Music Japan
