The Pavel Haas Quartet is one of the most talented quartets in the world. This is their ninth disc on the Sprafon label, and it is Brahms! This is the first recording with a new member, viola player Luosha Huang. The quartet's recording of Dvorak's "America" (KKC-5170 / SU-4038) won the Record of the Year award at the 2011 Gramophone Awards. Subsequent releases of Smetana's String Quartets No. 1 "From My Life" & No. 2 (KKC-5668 / SU-4172), Dvorak's Piano Quintet & String Quintet No. 3 (KKC-6100 / SU-4195), and Shostakovich's String Quartets No. 2, 7 and 8 (KKC-6101 / The quartet is one of the best string quartets of our time, and has won many prizes from renowned magazines such as Record Geijutsu magazine's "Special Selection", Gramophone (UK), Diapason (France), and so on. This is the group's first recording of Brahms' Piano Quintet and String Quintet No. 2.The Piano Quintet is the masterpiece of this ensemble. The quintet is played in perfect harmony with pianist Boris Giltburg, who won the first prize at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in 2013. In the String Quintet No. 2, the coupling is performed with Pavel Nikul, one of the founding members of the ensemble. Originally conceived as the Fifth Symphony, this work is full of masculine strength, vigorous passion, and fresh inventiveness that is hard to imagine from Brahms in his later years.
