Jan Bartosz, the young Czech pianist Jan Bartosz, who was highly praised by Brendel, took up the challenge of playing Janacek with great emotion. Janacek's Piano Sonata in E-flat major, "On the Streets, October 1, 1905," was written in memory of a worker who was killed while participating in a demonstration to petition for the establishment of a university for Czechs, and the title, October 1, is the date. Through the Shaded Path is a lament for his beloved daughter Olga, who died prematurely.
