This album is a collection of Bach's harpsichord concertos by the queen of harpsichord, Zuzana Ruzicicova (1928-). A world-famous harpsichordist, Ruzicicova studied at the Prague Academy, and after winning the first prize at the Munich International Competition in 1956, she made her way onto the world's top stage. Ruzychková founded the Prague Chamber Soloists with Václav Neumann. The recordings here are from that period and show Bach with great musicality and dignity. Ruzhchikova is famous for her interpretations of Baroque music, Poulenc, Martinů, and others, but it is her interpretations of Bach that are synonymous with her. Most of Bach's harpsichord concertos are arrangements of Bach's own old works (including works by others), but the idea of elevating the harpsichord from a "bass continuo" to a "solo instrument" is extremely innovative and has significance as a precursor to the piano concerto in music history.The works include No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052, which Schumann praised as "one of the greatest masterpieces"; No. 5 in F minor, BWV 1056, known for its beautiful largo; No. 7 in G minor, BWV 1058, an arrangement of the Violin Concerto No. 1, BWV 1041; No. 3 in D major, BWV 1054, an arrangement of the Violin Concerto No. 2, BWV 1042; and many more masterpieces that present the beauty of melody and the gorgeousness that only the harpsichord can offer.
