Description:

The origin of the Canterbury scene and one of the most famous bands of the scene, the Henny Onstad Art Center in Oslo, Norway, hosted a two-night European tour on February 27 and 28, 1971, and the entire concert was recorded live in a limited 4LP box set. This is a limited 4LP BOX edition of the live concert. The concert was part of an art exhibition by the Boyle Family, a British art group. The concert was a special one, as a film of Mark Boyle, a member of the Boyle Family, was projected during the performance on the soft machine. More importantly, the tapes on which both concerts were recorded have been preserved, and they are in excellent shape. They are wonderful live recordings that offer a glimpse into how the sound changed dramatically from one night to the next. This is the first time that two consecutive nights of live recordings by one of Soft Machine's most classic quartets have been released in their entirety, although two sets from the second night (February 28, 1971) have been previously released. The first night (February 27, 1971) has never been released before. In the words of the late Michael King, who released Sunday concert on his own Reel Recordings label in 2009, "This is clearly the best recording of a classical soft machine quartet on tape.
